If the power cable is disconnected when the laptop is awake it turns off. If it is disconnected when the laptop is asleep, it stays asleep, and can be awakened to run on batteries.

This doesn't seem right.

Definitely not right. It should just drop to battery power. The screen might dim slightly (to save on power) but that should be it.

Sounds like your battery is just about toast. Many have had an issue similar to this, where when the power adapter is removed, the computer shuts off unexpectedly, though it runs fine on AC. I had that problem on my mbp. I developed out of no where one day and I had to call apple and they replaced my battery for me. no problems since.

You may also want to search the forum here. There are many a thread about this and they all result in the same thing: Calling apple.

I have to agree with Collin973, if an SMC reset doesn't work, it's most likely a bad battery. Call Apple or if you can just go to the nearest Genius Bar at an Apple Store. Hope it all works out.

Cheers
