Mac Book Pro has developed a 'Ticking Sound' after Midnight... Anyone heard of this ?

Hi,

Recently I was woken up at midnight to an unusual sound in my room, like a mini sirren going off for about 5 seconds... Thinking its was a dream I thought nothing more of it...

Until it started happening most nights at midnight! 5 seconds long. Then silence...

Tonight and last night Ive been using my computer after midnight and a ticking noise seems to have now developed and its coming through the computers speakers... How strange!

Has anyone heard of this ? Or know how this issue can be resolved... ?

Hoping I can get a good nights sleep soon..

j/k...actually, this might be stupid, but is your cell phone near the speakers when the speakers go off. Cell phone frequencies are so strong that they many times cause speakers to make noise.

Then it's the speakers and not the MacBook, most likely. The speakers in my car and at my Mac both make a certain kind of sound randomly when my cell phone is near (like a beeping buzzing). It could be that there is something like a cell phone that's interfering with your speakers.

Or if it's coming through the speakers, maybe it's software. Did you run anything weird lately?? like some shady guy's bad alarm clock software?? lol..

This is especially true if you have a GSM or iDEN (Nextel) cell phone. It's not so much the frequency, but how these phones operate. They send out packets of data in rapid bursts that sound like either a tick (when it's just small bits of data) or loud buzzing (when in a voice call or active data session).

The remedy is to either move your phone further away from the speakers, or if you're in an area that supports 3G wireless services, upgrade your phone. 3G phones and networks use a different method of transmission that doesn't interfere with speakers and electronics nearly as much.

OS X has certain tidying up jobs that are set to run in the early hours each morning. This is a hangover from its UNIX past, when mainframes were expected to stay on 24/7.

It could be one of these.

(before about 10.4.5, they only ran if the mac was on or asleep at night, but now if the mac is off at night, they run when next turned on.)

That's what I was thinking at first, maybe the ticking is just the processor/HD working to get the cron jobs done? If all else fails, call a priest!

If i leave my MBP on overnight (on my desk, which is at head level right next to me) I can hear the drive parking heads occasionally...then resuming work (whatever that may be)...then stopping again. Its annoying at first but it's normal.

Thanks for the responses... Funny the thread took a kinda 'faith' vibe...


To begin with I did actually rebuke it thinking it was something demonic in my semi awake/sleep state! How funny.

Then I realized that it was the laptop... Think I know what the ticking problem was...

Will keep checking the 'Midnight Noise'...

For all the people on the phone train of thought, I always leave my MB Pro on the other side of the room and have never heard any distortion from the speakers.... when my phones been near.
