So... I want to buy a mac book pro. but! I want to buy the ram and hardrive elsewhere.

I found this place for the ram. =)

Is there any guides to getting it installed? I looked but maybe one of you savy mac fellas saw something I didn't.

but I wanted to know how hard it is to find a 7200rpm 120gb hardrive compad with the macbook pro? If there even is one.

RAM is user serviceable and easy as pie to install.

A new HDD might take a bit more work, you're gonna need to take that sucker apart.
 
I am pretty sure trying to install a harddrive yourself will void the warranty, Apple provides the option for up to a 120GB one. I think the highest laptop harddrive that would fit would be 160GB.

Why is it so essential to get ram by the same place? Can you enable double rate? Otherwise downgrading it and buying 2 sticks is like $20 more than just going stock (but you get 2 512mb to ebay i suppose)
 
Well first how much RAM do you have? And second....OSX is VERY PICKY about what type of RAM you put in it.
 
I meant that RAM from OWC is like $120 each. Downgrading to 2x 512mb saves $100 so it pretty much is a wash. WHy is it important that it is by the same company? Will the double rate thing work?
 
Yes you will get "double rate". If you downgrade all the way and get two 1gb OWC sticks instead of just going with 2GB of Apple's memory...you will save money. Getting one stick of OWC and one stick of Apple may not allow the "double rate".

That makes sense. Could you point me in a direction where someone (or a site) has confirmed that it supports double rate? I asked about it late last month and no one really had an answer for me. (Not that you don't sound like a trustworthy person I'd just like to read all the gory details ;) )
 
Don't have enough time to search but it is in the forums and the web. I found a little article from www.notebookreview.com.

"Memory (RAM)

Apple is continuing their policy of offering less RAM in their standard spec than comparable PCs. With 512 MB of 667MHz DDR2 the MacBook Pro has half as much RAM as a typical Windows notebook. I have noticed that the RAM is faster though -- looking at various notebook configurations from other vendors I saw 533 MHz DDR2. In order to benefit form this new type of memory it is important to have it operate as fast as possible. Some flavors of DDR2 (such as the 400 and 533 MHz versions popular on value systems) are actually slower than first generation DDR.

For DIY up-graders that would want to add their own memory, keep in mind that Intel's platform has dual-channel memory. Apple leaves you with an empty ram slot on the MacBook Pro. When you upgrade your RAM and populate both slots (and you should on the standard model) an additional benefit is the increased memory bandwidth of dual channel."
