Hi, first time poster here.

I have had my ibook for about 1 year and I love it. It's been a treat to discover use for new programs that I didn't plan on using.

But after a year, I'm already starting to worrry about the life of my laptop. There have been no problems yet, and I read an interesting thread about the expected life of my ibook, but I was wondering if there is anything I can do to prolong this life?

Like, how often should I shut my computer down? Will it run faster if I put all of my music etc. on my external HD and make more room on it? Is it OK to leave it on but shut for long periods of time?

Any other tips you can give me about taking care of my ibook and how long I can expect to own this wonderful machine would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I tell you this with all honesty, just use the machine the way you want to. I understand where you're coming from, you're worried that you could 'damage' your system, or minimise its lifetime by doing certain things. I'm certainly guilty of 'babying' my stuff, but all that ends up happening is that you end up selling it a few years down the line to upgrade and discover you didn't get as much from it as you could have.

Just use your computer and enjoy it. They're built to last.

If it's under a year old, you could always buy AppleCare if you're worried about hardware failures. It will give you 2 more years of coverage.
