The lack of responses would tell you no one knows.

If you are concerned about security you should only use software from a well known and trusted vendor where you can check reviews.

There are multiple posts about malware being distributed via github. They do the best they can, but you have to be careful.

I do use some github images for things like Plex Tautulli. Since these are active products, with forums supported by the developers, I accept the small risk that their might be a problem.

If you try to save a buck with free software then you may end up paying for it with problems. Good software is a garden that needs constant weeding. The gardener needs to be paid.

Have you not asked about dubious Mac cleaner applications often enough? Have you not been told multiple times by multiple people to stay the heck away from snake oil software?

Seriously, enough is enough. Just stay the heck away from it and stop trying to fix something that isn't broken to begin with ;)

I run cccleaner - doesn't run as well as it used to and hasn't been updated in quite a while - guess they want us to use subscribe and pay version. I use to get rid of things such as facebook cookies since I don't use FB and make it easier to get rid of stuff but still keep cookies and data from things I want to keep

Don't lump the good in with the bad. I don't know about the others, but OnyX is definitely trustworthy and has been around forever. It's supported by donations and the developer updates it specially for each MacOS release. I've used it many times over the years for tweaking Finder stuff (dock options, naming and format of screenshots, stuff like that).

Can you do damage to your Mac with something like this? Yes, if you're not careful. Do you need it to use your Mac normally? Probably not. But that doesn't make it "dubious" or "snake oil".

Nobody needs these.

Really? Because before it became an official Mac option, I used OnyX to set a lock screen message with my phone number in case my computer got lost. I've also used it to tweak the format, name and save location of screenshots before those were possible to change in MacOS. Just because you don't need something doesn't mean "nobody" does.
