I have had a problem for a while. I thought the problem might be related to the fusion drive, so I am now booting from an external SSD. I fear the problem may be related to Dropbox usage. I rely heavily upon dropbox, but I may need to change that. Any help you can give me would be much appreciated.

Here are the specifics:

I ran EtreCheckPro version: 6.4.4 (6E015), which identified Kernel panics and Heavy CPU usage.

Here is the report:
Code:

Your message is cryptic. You have a problem, alright. You have kernel panics. That's a hardware problem. You did not identify how it is impacting your computer. But, as this portends catastrophic failure if it persists, maybe all you need to know is that a new Mac is in your future, and very soon.

I apologize for being so cryptic. I am intimidated and know I need help, so I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

My computer was slowing down to the point of being unusable for a while. I did everything I could think of to do. Several months ago I thought the internal hard drive was the problem. Since it is an iMac with (what I now know is a crappy) fusion drive, I opted to try to boot from an external drive. I have the system set up on a 1TB SSD (508 GB), and I have dropbox set up on another 1 TB SSD (693 GB). The other drives were the Fusion drive, which I do not use, two Time Machine backups, and a thumb drive that I had in the hub.

Switching to this setup was a definite improvement, until the last week or two. I don't know how to describe it other than that the system hangs. Seemingly without warning I will get beachballs while I am working. Sometimes I can switch to another app which seems to work fine, and sometimes it seems to drag down the entire system. I have tried waiting it out. Sometimes it will become functional again after a a few minutes. I have tried waiting it out, even leaving for an hour or two or even overnight, but that does not seem to help.

Gregg, I did not know that kernel panics were hardware problems. I also understand that you did not say that they were strictly hardware problems. Anyway, is there a way to determine which hardware might be causing it? I hate to throw away this beautiful monitor, which seems to work fine.

Brian, I did a clean install when I switched to the external boot drive. I think my only choice using the internet recovery was Monterey. I could try that again, but it took an entire day to install.

Kernal Panic does not equal hardware problem. It means exactly what it says.

If the Fusion drive is wonky there's the possibility it could be causing your issues even if you're not running the system from it or even accessing it for data at all.

I stand corrected. Kernal panics can be a sign of hardware failure, especially when they are frequent.

Did you run First Aid? There are many other suggestions out there that you could try. Do a search. I'd stay away from the MacKeeper site though.

OK, here's my suggestion.

DISCONNECT ALL DRIVES EXCEPT your external boot SSD.
Disconnect the hub, too.

Boot and run this way for 24-48 hours.
Does the situation change?

Come back here with the results.

Another question:
You say that you "do not use" the fusion drive.
Is it still mounting up on the desktop?
What happens if you eject it? (right click and choose eject)

The external SSD that I use for Dropbox is large enough to hold all of my dropbox files, so I turned Smart Sync off yesterday. Since then I have not had the extreme problems I was having before. That is, the computer has not frozen. Activity Monitory shows the CPU% for Dropbox has been hovering around 100% for the last hour. In that time I have seen it as high as 240% and as low as 40%. I have not added anything to the dropbox folder, so I have no idea what it might be thinking about.

Gregg, if you are referring to First Aid in Disk Utility I did run that. It did not find any problems.

Fishrrman, I have disconnected all of the drives except for the boot drive and the dropbox one. I cannot really work without having that drive connected. I just ejected the Fusion drive, and nothing remarkable happened. The drive was just removed.

Well, sumthin' tells me that Dropbox may be "the source" of your problems.
You'll either have to live with it, or "find another way...."
