I need help, I have the old G5 Mac pro 1.8 tower. I got it when the G5's first game out. I wanted to upgrade to a new desktop. I want to know which one should I get, the new Mac mini or stay with the towers. Also which Mac mini should I get or tower. What is the speed difference in between my Mac pro 1.8 single processor and the new basic mac mini and basic mac pro tower. I use it for Photoshop, Itunes, Editing RAW photos and learning final cut pro. Thanks for any help....

get an iMac. by the time you add all the accessories to a Mini the price is the same as the cheapest imac

I was looking at the 27" iMAC but a lot of people have been having a lot of issues with them.

some random thoughts;

base model mac pro is widely regarded as very expensive for what you get. some suggestions that the top end imac would be equivalent/greater in performance if not in expandability.

personally think there's a bit more risk of failure attached to the imac - with its all in one format - happy to admit my opinion is coloured by my old imac G5 problems. others on here will disagree or if you go for applecare it may not matter anyway.

do you you need the multiple internal drives of a tower, do you need the PCI-E slots etc?

do you have a good screen you'd want to continue to use?

suspect whichever way you go the processing will be faster than the G5 - even the base macmini.

tbh think you need to provide more info for better feedback.

also have a read over on the macpro forum as this sort of question has come up before i think

Well, I was thinking of the mac mini 2.53 server and a external blue ray burner with a external HD bay that can hold around 4 HD. I was also thinking of going for the 24" inch apple screen. Do any one think apple will make any more desktop announcements in Feb Mac world 2010

Why? For $100 less to buy the 27" iMac you'll get a 3" bigger screen, 15% faster processor, faster hard drive, an optical drive, FAR more powerful graphics, a keyboard, a mouse AND the ability to upgrade to twice the RAM.

The ONLY benefit the Mini server would have is OSX server, which is a total waste unless its actually working as a server for 5+ other machines.

Apple does not participate in the Macworld events anymore.

The issue is with Adobe's Flash plugin, not Apple or its hardware.
