Mac DVD streaming over WiFi help

hi all

this is what im trying to do:


back up all my DVD's to my HDD's with Mac The Ripper.
stream them onto my Plasma with VLC

PowerBook is connected to my plasma via DVI
HDD's are located upstairs on a Windows PC with 500gb HDD (soon to be 1TB) Win Xp Pro

Issues i'm having are :

VLC sometimes skips frames and sometimes will not play the DVD (Menus enabled BTW)

WiFi should be fine for this i would think but what am i missing?
or is there a better solution out there ? i do not want to compress the DVD to DivX or Xvid due to time it would take to convert them on my Mac.

Any help or advice of how you got your media working would be great

The claimed speed of wireless G is never reached. So I'm just guessing you are experiencing a lack of speed.

What bit-rate is the movie ripped at I guess is the main question we need to know?

full DVD rip - just done series 3 of enterprise at 6.9gb per disk

would think dvd is 10mb video and 5mb audio 5.1 sound or there abouse

BTW some episodes work fine

I'm guessing that's the problem as full DVD quality has a couple of thousand kbps. In VLC with a movie playing, go to the get info window and check what quality its playing at. I think it might say original source and playing rate as caparison, like Quicktime. This will indicate if its a lack of the networks speed.

The best option is to decompress the quality to an avi, do a forum search to find the best options to rip at. Also if your network is also streaming audio, that is going to be high also because its not compressed.

Basically can you post what the video and sound quality of you movies are at, by using the get info window.

It really just sounds like a network speed problem. Even 802.11G can't really handle good quality films very well. Add to that the fact that I haven't seen an XP box capable of maintaining a good WiFi connection too.

To cut back on the drop outs, make sure Interference Robustness is enabled in the AirPort menu of the PowerBook. This probably won't do much, but it may help a little.

Really need the major information, in particular the kbps rate

But I can safely say that your network speed is slow.

1. Isn't that an ad-hoc network? Are you running this thing through a base station/router?
2. Do you ever read your email?

lol yep to ad hoc as my wifi is connected to my broadband router to get it wifi around the house i have had to put a wifi ethernet bridge on it to pump out internet to the machines in my house .

no i just imported my work e-mails to my mac hence 177 mails unopened lol

and with their Net DVD Cinema you can send it to your tv but i wish it had the ability to recocred live tv like a pvr it would be a nice feture but it is nice to know that some companies care mac user when it comes to media centers if anyone has more info on the abilty to recored multie hd signals at one time it would help alot
