So i added my work exchange mail to the mac email client, but noticed that my drive getting full pretty fast and saw that this is due to the mail client downloading ALL 80k email to my HDD. How can i stop the mail client to download all these emails?

Mail app > Accounts > Select your Exchange account > You should see a setting for the number of mail days to sync.

Who’s your Exchange mail provider?
I missed the part where you said it was a work mail account.

They will be able to configure the option on the server side.

Apple just doesn't provide that level of configuration on the Mac Mail client. You might try the Mac version of Outlook, which also doesn't allow for limiting the days of syncing, but does offer a "download headers only" option.

That option isn't in the Mac Mail app. It's limited to iOS/iPadOS.
