For 4000 pounds you could get a nice Quad 2.5 Ghz PM, 2 GB of RAM, 500GB HD, NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT 256MB plus a 23'' ACD. That should be quite adequate for video editing. If you forewent the display, you could get an even better graph card - the QUADRO FX 4500 512MB - and 4GB of RAM.
depends on the work you're planning on doing. if it's involving Apple's Motion, the Video Card is very important, With Final Cut Pro it is less so. Overall though, I would say don't bother with the Quadra, it's not going to provide much of a speed increase over the 7800, so better to save the money for more storage or RAM, maybe 4GB or so
From what i've read on these forums RAM seems to be the way to go. While the graph card is important, most of the work is done by the processor (I think

I think 8 GB of RAM is sort of overkill, and the money would be better spent on more hard drive space or a new camera or something. Also, don't buy the extra RAM from Apple. Most of the time Apple charges too much for RAM upgrades. Just get the stock 512 MB (or upgrade to 1 GB if you'd like) and then buy the rest of your RAM somewhere else. newegg.com is good, but I don't know if they do business in the UK or not.

Having a nuts graphics card will only really make a difference in Motion, Aperture and intense games at this point.
Having more than 4GB of memory at this point is pretty much overkill, and really doesn't get put to use.

well if i had £4k to spend - then i'd get a dual core 2ghz 2gb ram 1tb external HDD and a HD Camera but thats just me

yeah this is pretty much what I first thought. a top line system is nothing without good video to edit, so the HD camera is key, as is the storage space to put it all on.
thanks for all the help so far i have a camera and 1 tb of ext disk space already . i am going to go for the qaud with 4gb of ram should i go for ECC OR NON ECC ram the price diffence is quite big but i dont mind paying if its worth the extra money
