Mac for Uni, are DB2, websphere available?

As title says, I'm starting uni very soon and we need to buy a laptop. I want to buy the powerbook so I asked the lecturer if this would be suitible. He said he used to be a big mac user but warned me amongst other things that:

"Our software deal with Microsoft and IBM gets free software mostly for LINUX and Windows. I have never checked the Mac, so I am not sure if tools like websphere, DB2 etc are OK with the Mac."

so does anyone know if IBM software like DB2 and webspere are available for the mac, or if there are ppc linux versions? I know that there are versions for IBM's ppc servers but I'm not sure if they would run on mac os x or a mac with linuc installed.

nobdy gonna answer? I really need help on this one. What should i do?? Anyone know if VPC would be fast enough or would just crawl etc?

I wouldn't recomend VPC...

Well the link you provided has a i-series/p-series/ppcLinux websphere application server, but not the rest....strange. the i and p series use the power4 processor right? that means there is also a db2 for that platform. But will these run on linux on a mac without a recompile (no source right?) or even os x via x11 (i guess the latter is a no no?)

Hmm, well I think I remebered somewhere you can use X11 remotely, as for localy, it depends what "PPC Linux" means...sorry I can't help much, but you might try contacting IBM themselves and asking what the requirements for PPC linux is (if Mac hardware is supported) and if they plan to support OS X sometime in the future, think Panther.... I don't beleive that websphere is open source.

If you are really bent on using VPC, and linux is not an option, use Win2000, or linux, they will be the fastest OS you can use, anything else will be sluggish. Anyway, good luck.
