I sold my Mac pro and picked up a mini. I have 3 hard drives from the Mac pro that I want to put in a pc tower, network the mini to the pc, and be able to read and or write from the mini to the disks in the pc. Can this be done? I don't think it can but thought I would check anyways. I am pretty sure since win7 can't recognize the disks, they won't mount. Haven't been on a pc in many years but any software out there for win7 to read HFS disks? Tnks

I believe you need to format them as "FAT32" in order for your Mac and PC to both be able to Read and Write to it.
If you have Windows 7, it won't be able to read/write the disks by default... but you will be able to "Format" the disk via your disk manager and set the File System to FAT32..

Any experience with this program? Looking for how good it works? I swore I would never go back to pc's but apple has priced the Mac pro's out of my reach so building my own for less than half the price. Apple just lost a customer for there big machines.
you can download the trial version to check it out. i recently used it to access my external hard drive (HFS) from my Win7 PC. worked great
I have one of these... http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/esata/Elite-AL_Pro-RAID_Ready_Dual-Drive . Not bad but noisy fan. Have tried using as a scratch when using handbrake but does not work. The rip only completes 75% then hangs whereas I can rip to my internal hard drive without a hiccup. Not sure what the deal is but not impressed with FW800 on this mini.
For what it's worth, I have eight terabytes of data external to my mini using FW800 with never a problem. I would expect FW800 on your mini to outperform any networked server. I have personally seen rates in excess of 85MB/sec sustained.

What kind of enclosure are you using? OWC has a 4 disk enclosure I've been looking at. First I need to find out why handbrake won't complete a rip to my external. Also, for the time it was ripping to the external, the speed was allot slower than ripping to the internal drive. Weird. Am using hitachi 1TB drive to rip to in the external.
I have a LaCie Bigger Disk Extreme (very, very old, 250MB X 4 in RAID-0) which is very fast. I have two Western Digital MyBook Pros in RAID 0 as a 4TB Time Machine volume. My current 'main' drive is an OWC Mercury-AL FW800+USB2 4.0TB RAID-0 drive (2 x 2 TB). Since it's only two drives, it doesn't get the speed of the four drive LaCie.
Since ripping DVDs is usually limited by the speed of your DVD drive, I'm surprised that your choice of destination makes any difference.

Yes, it works how you would expect it to.
As far as Mac Pros, I do personally find them to be overpriced. I am currently using hack boxes for desktops and real Macbook Pros.
