I thought I'd like to make a thread about all the BS our kind has to go through to play even the basic online games. I wanted to hear other people's stories about what they have to go through once people find out they're playing on a Mac. As for my story, I put up with the stigma for many years (as I'm sure have most of you) that comes with playing on a mac. We love our computers, but the current mindset of the Gamer is that macs suck, PCs rule.

Recently while playing World of Warcraft, I mentioned that the Mac version of Ventrilo was missing a feature that they were trying to get me to enable, long story short, once they heard that I was playing on a mac, as usual, they all started making "macs suck" comments. For the first time, I snapped. I challenged them to show me proof that macs sucked, and the best reason I heard was also pretty lame; It went along the lines of "Because the market has clearly chosen PCs, macs are terrible". He's right in that PCs have a larger market share, but when I challenged him with "Macs are the only computer growing in market share", he retorted with "That's only because of iPhones...". Again, partially true, but people wouldn't be buying macs either if they sucked now would they?

This kind of thing drives me nuts. We can't play games on our macs without facing mac bashing left and right. I'd love to hear any stories and comments that you guys have.

Looks like you and those people you play with take things a little too seriously . It's just a computer, it's a means to an end. It's not a lifestyle choice or something to get offended by. I love the colour red. If someone told me they thought red sucked I'm not going to go mad at them.

My passion is playing games, not computers. Do what I do if you think there are "hardships" in owning a Mac... install Windows too. That way that one machine you bought can play anything.

If you want to stick with Mac and be a martyr to the cause, just keep playing on OSX and don't mention what system you run. That way you'll continue enjoying your game and they won't have an easy target to wind up.

Forty years ago people had the exact same BS "discussions" about Ford vs Dodge.

It's all nonsense.

Use what feels right and fits your needs - everything else is just noise and not worth responding to.

You don't understand. Just owning a mac makes people go ******* on you. It doesn't matter what OS you're running.
Also, it really shouldn't matter what OS I'm running, I don't get how you can disagree with this. I don't bash people for using windows, I don't expect to be bashed for using my mac. I wont use any other OS, and likely neither will they.

I do understand, people went mad at me when I was at college for liking Macs. I still have friends that dislike Apple for the most pedantic reasons. But so what? Getting angry at pathetic people isn't going to change anything.

Also you don't have to keep upvoting your posts. I can fix that with a quick neutralising downvote.

Just an advice. There is nothing wrong with anything. I don't see why you should say one is better or another, if you need gaming get a pc and if you want good computer experience get a mac. sorted.

Hm, I was playing TF2 the other day and mentioned something about my mac. Turns out quite a few people on the server were on macs and some of the pc users were intrigued and supportive (some other guy on the server was on an old macbook and we were helping him with framerate issues).

There are idiot everywhere, don't take it personally...

Do normal (well, as normal as a gamer could be) people really care if you're using a Mac or PC? I thought that was just troll crap

It is. The OP's experience is exactly what you'd expect in a game like WoW, whose target demographic seems to be gamers under the age of 14 or over the age of 30 living in their parents' basement.
don't discriminate about the people living in the attic too...

Yup. TF2 people are pretty open. I even helped a PC friend got white earbuds. But I typically play on good servers.

It seems like you were expecting to be heralded with a barrage of "screw those guys!!!!! macs rul3!!!!!!!!"

The first reply was spot on. You seem like a young lad, so I'm sure with time you'll understand that haters will in fact, hate. I'm sure you knew going into your purchase that macs weren't really optimized for computer gaming. That doesn't mean they aren't capable of it.

The best way to react to trolls and haters is to just laugh. There's no sense trying to change their minds about it, and once you engage them you're right where they want you. If you can't handle the criticism, just get a windows machine, but there's really no reason to let things like this bother you.

best of luck

Welcome to a taste of Mac world from the mid 80s through the early 2000s. Everyone gives you grief and no one gives us software support. If you really want to "hardcore" game on a Mac you are going to need to be ready to learn fast, and be self-supporting.

That said when it comes to voice chat services like Ventrilo you may want to look into Wine and WineBottler. This will let you use the same tools Linux users do make Windows based chat clients function. I used to run Vent in a WineBottle while playing EVE-Online. A few people tried to give me grief but I flatly refused to engaged in their rants and even deflected a bit by agreeing that Apple really needed to improve their video card drivers. Also putting in the effort to at least try and run stuff in Wine made the point that I wasn't just some dumb Appletard.

Really it's all about how you handle your s*** when they start going off. It also helps if you are a decent player and have a good reputation in your group/guild/server. My typical answer on TF2 to people who get persnickety about me being on a Mac is "ya, well I don't feel like rebooting in Windows just to play two or three rounds."

you can port Ventrillo to Mac using Wineskin. Some people has reported it works, though I never tried. WineBottler is very old now and seems to be abandoned... the creator hasn't even updated his blog about it since Oct. 2010, while I keep Wineskin updated.
