Hi, I recently switched and received my new 15inch AlPB and got .mac with it. However, everytime i put the .mac installer CD in i get through the first couple of steps and then the error message, "there are newer versions of some of the softwware packages in ".mac" already installed on the volume "MAcintosh HD". This software does not allow older versions to be installed on top of newer versions.

I have included a screen shot of the message, if you fine folks could help me figure out what to do in order to get registered I would be m uch obliged. Thanks.

You shouldn't need the cd. Go to System Preferences, and click Internet, and then .Mac. If you already have a username and password, enter it in. If you don't already have a username, click the signup button. That should do it.

Any of the apps you need, you can download off of www.mac.com.

If this doesn't do what you needed, reply and explain how I might have misunderstood the problem. Hope this helps!

Yep, the disk is to make you feel better about buying a boxed version of .mac. That way there is more than a few pieces of paper in it.

The disk has (lets see if I remember) iphoto, ichat, backup, virex, isync, and ical.

All those apps can be downloaded from www.mac.com, once you set up your account. If you look hard enough on the CD, you will probably be able to find individual installers, for things like virex, which you might not already have.

The important thing in the box is the 15 or so long string of letters and numbers. This is what you will use to go to the mac.com website and prove that you purchased the box. This is the only thing you really need. Don't throw it out!!! (until after you are sure it worked).

I just purchased a boxed version with my new G5. My membership just got renewed today. With the boxed version, I was able to renew and get the rebate they are having with new macs.
