This is odd.

I signed up for a trial of .Mac several months ago, which expired, but I never deleted the icon from the top right of the screen. Today, I noticed that the icon was spinning as if it was backing up, which is odd, so I clicked it and it said nothing interesting (just "Open .Mac Sync Preferences"), so I ignored it.

About 2 mins later, I got this popup:

I have the latest version of Leopard and ran Software Update 2 days ago, so why would this message appear now, especially as I don't have a .Mac/Mobile Me account any more?

It seems really odd. Has this happened to anyone else?

Actually funny you brought this up. I just reinstalled Tiger (about two weeks ago) and during the registration screens, it mentioned MobileMe not .Mac, although .Mac still appears in the System Preferences.

Only does that if you set up wireless networking in the tab before, and it goes to the Apple servers to retrieve that.

It won't display it if you aren't connected to the net.
