Mac Itunes - how to STOP saving audio files to library?

Whenever I open a file (e.g. lecture recording) to play on itunes, it automatically saves that file to the library (under 'songs'). This is super annoying because I only want songs in my library. I went to preference to tick off 'Add songs to library when adding to playlists' but it STILL shows up in the library tab whenever I play something. Is there an option to stop adding audio files to library?

Uncheck Copy files to iTunes Media? It's on by default.........

I play them in Quicklook rather than iTunes by hitting the space bar.
You might try changing the default app for mp3's to some player other than iTunes, using the GetInfo "change all" option.
-That might get messy though?
