Hello. I will soon be a new MacBook user. What are the best magazines for new users (those available in the USA)?

P.S. I picked up a copy of this months MacWorld and the mag seems great.

I subscribe to MacWorld, but I'll have to agree with many members of this forum in that you'll get the same information (more up-to-date for that matter) by checking MacRumors. MacWorld is great for other things though, just not Mac news.

Another great magazine is MacAddict, the writing style makes it a bit more entertaining.

A second vote for MacAddict. I don't subscribe currently (the internet is still faster and cheaper) but I miss it.

I like Macworld. Mac Addict was more into tweaking, adding little shareware, free ware, etc.(at least when I got it years ago- my impression as I remember it) and MacWorld is more into buying guide, use of mac software, hardware reviews, new products, etc. I usually find one major article that I really use to my advantage. I think they might have trial offers. I just renewed Macworld after my free one ran out (which apple usually gives everyone who buys a new Mac!) and it cost me $12 for a year of Macworld. So 18 months for $12 isn't bad!

If you are buying a new mac wait for your free subscription then decide.

I enjoyed Macworld during the six month free subscription I got. But I didn't renew because, as near as I can tell, all their content is online for free.

Just bookmark their site and enjoy.

Good Old Days...

I remember when there was (in the U.S., at least)

MacWorld
MacUser
MacWeek (a weekly mac magazine, what a dream!)

for the price you pay, macworld is the best mac magazine out there. i read macaddict on occasion but i find it too expensive and the content is not nearly as good as macworld's.

I would also suggest "iCreate". Its a British Mag sold at better bookstores that has a lot of little tutorials on some of the different creative programs that the Mac has already built on it like; iTunes, iPhote, Garageband, etc. Its a little pricey (Approx 15 USD) but the stock paper and color tutorials are worth it. They do a subscription for about 145USD depending upon the Pound. Other than that I will add MacWorld as one I also read....

Bill.......

For news, this is the place to visit, I reckon.

I subscribed to MacAddict for a few years but let it lapse as the cost I was paying for postage didn't really justify what I got out of it. But over the years I picked up various useful bits of 'how tos' from it. Things like adjusting levels to make photos look better, and little tweaks for Terminal. Those kinds of things are what it's good for, in my opinion. The kind of things the man-on-the-street could benefit from. It's pretty light reading, which is a good thing for us non-pros.

You asked about magazines, but if you're new to Macs (I assume you are) I strongly recommend David Pogue's OSX Tiger: Missing Manual book. It's a thick book, but I read it from cover to cover and learned so much about Tiger (I was using OS8.6 before, so a quantum leap for me). It's written for the beginner and isn't technical in the least, but covers just about everything. Full of diagrams and step-by-steps, and really well laid out. Of course you don't have to read it cover-to-cover; it's still a great reference book. I know I wouldn't be so familiar with my machine if I hadn't read it.

yeah, US version macworld is great. I subscribe it for two years. but it's not real magazine. it's digital magazine. if you go to zinio.com, you can download digital version of it. it's very cool. you don't have to bring bunch of magazines during travel or whenever you go. just grab your macbook or whatever. that's it. I also read UK version of macworld, too. I think UK one shows more detail, news, interesting issues than US one. it's also available from zinio as digital verison.:)

Another vote for zinio.com - I've been subscribing to the US version of MacWorld for 2 years now via Zinio (I would get the UK version but it's $70/year as opposed to $20/year and I'm sure the content isn't very much different!). Great quality, you get an e-mail every month to tell you when you're magazine is ready. Fantastic stuff :)

eBay

Don't forget to check eBay for Mac magazine subcriptions. I just renewed MacAddict for 3 more years for about $10 including shipping! I was nervous about doing it at first, but my latest issue says Aug 09 on the label. I don't get the disc with it, but you can find all that stuff online. I ordered Macworld on eBay as well.
