I'm having a slight issue with the stock Mac Mail app. I have my Gmail account on it, and whenever I open the app, it takes anywhere from 5-10 minutes for anything to show in my Inbox. For example, when I shut my Mac down last night, I closed the Mail app leaving 8 emails in the inbox. When I came in this morning, started up my Mac and opened Mail, the inbox was blank for 5 minutes, then the 8 emails appeared.

I know it's not a major issue, but it bugs me. Anyone got any ideas how to stop this?

Cheers

P.S. I tried downloading some other mail apps to see if it was something wrong with my Gmail or the Mac Mail app, and the other apps didn't have this problem. Unfortunately I didn't like any of them as much as Mac Mail, hence am trying to resolve the problem rather than use another app.

Something definitely sounds out-of-whack. I don't know of any setting on the Mac or at Gmail that would cause this. Any "Rules" in Mail that might be getting hung for some reason?

Might be time to remove and re-add the account.

Try Mailbox menu > Rebuild, if that doesn't help remove & re-add account. If neither clears it up, boot into Safe Mode by holding Shift during startup, does it behave the same there?

OK got issues now! I deleted the account as suggested following those instructions, but now I can't re-add my Google account. The little pop up box just goes grey after I enter my password and nothing happens.

Any help??

The standard diagnostic test from Apple is to create a new test account on your mac. Then logged into that test account, try and add your gmail to the mail.app If everything works fine then you know that the corruption is inside your account profile. If the issue is the same in the new test account, then your can point the finger at the OS.

I suggest:
  • Delete the GMail account.
  • Quit Mail app
  • Delete the GMail folder in your user library
  • Delete the keychain access to the GMail account.
  • Restart the computer
  • Try adding GMail account again

I Just tried this, and in the new test account it was the same. So does that mean there's something wrong with the OS?

If you did try all of the things as described, I have no further knowledge.

Perhaps @DeltaMac or @Weaselboy know more or could be of assistance?

Go to gmail.com and logout of the account then log back in and manually type in the password to make sure you have the correct password.

Do you have IMAP enabled on gmail.com in settings?

One thing to check is if you have threads or messages tagged with multiple tags on gmail.com. That drives Mail app nuts. GMail uses a non-standard IMAP implementation where it makes a folder in Mail for every tag, so if one message has two tags the Mail app does not know what to do and flips out.

Is this where you are trying to add the account?

Yeah that's where I'm trying to attach it, and then after I enter my password I just get this screen. I do indeed have IMAP enabled, but will have a check ref the multiple tag thing. Any other suggestions? Help is much appreciated.

Just verify you have the correct password like I mentioned.

Did this ever work correctly? As in it worked fine for a while then now is borked?

Yeah password's definitely.

Well it was working as mentioned it my initial post. I removed the account as per one of this thread's suggestions, and it's when I've come to re-ad it that I'm having this issue. I'm now unable to add it at all

Well it was working as mentioned it my initial post.

So it always had this pokey behavior and never ever worked properly then?

Try running the app Etrecheck. It will create an anonymized report showing everything running on your system. Post that report here for us to take a look. I'm wondering if you have some sort of security or AV app running that is causing this and that report will show us.

Thanks for the help, but in a nutshell I've managed to sort it by reinstalling MacOS. A pain but at least it's sorted
