I like to mark mail from services I've subscribed to like Twitter, LinkedIn as junk and look at them as I please there.

Yet I can't get mail from Twitter or LinkedIn amongst others to consistently auto mark as junk, no matter how often I have moved them to junk.

I've recently cleared my junk settings and am trying to get mail to relearn using the idiotic keep junk in inbox setting. Still after a week, these mails are not coming in marked as junk.

I suppose I can just create a rule, but am I missing something? Most searches I've done seem to be about the junk filter being too aggressive rather than too lenient.

You didn't say which provider but most will learn what you consider to be spam if you move the message to their "official" Spam/Junk folder. Have you tried that instead of using Mail's "Enable junk mail filtering"?

I think we want's the Mail.app to learn what junk is and filter it appropriately. He may be using iCloud mail, so there is no other provider (like gmail).

Apple's junk filters aren't great, but they can be reasonably serviceable. Go to the Mail app's Preferences, then to Junk Mail. Make sure it's turned on. Click on Trust Junk Headers in email (or something like that) and set other settings how you like. You may also want to create some filters, too, if some items slip through without being flagged as spam by the app.

Yes that's exactly what I want. It sounds like the Mail's filters are just pretty weak, I'll start creating rules then.

Both my Gmail and my Office 365 emails handle spam at the server quite well. If one misses something, just putting it in the Spam folder indicates to the server that it's spam. Same is true for un-learning.

I get a lot of advertising that is unwanted but legitimate and in those cases I just unsubscribe if I feel they're sending too much.

I've never had to create a rule for spam.

Gmail is excellent at handling spam. I love the promotions tab. I get a lot of 'wanted' junk mail, but I don't want it popping in my main inbox and grabbing my attention, I look at it when I want to.

MacMail seems to be pretty useless at filtering span how you want it to.
