Hi,

I've decided that I want to start using the Mac mail client with my Outlook.com email address but it's becoming a real pain in trying to set it up.

At the moment I have it set up on my iPhone and iPad and it works flawlessly, I get push notifications across both devices, and everything syncs across the web client and both devices.

Now that I have it set up on my Mac, I'm having issues. For example when I send a mail from my Mac, it sends one mail, but in the sent items folder there will be two mail, I double checked on the outlook.com site, and in the sent folder there are two items.

Is there any way to get this to play nice, so that everything stays sync'd across my iPhone, iPad and Mac. I believe that Outlook.com & Mac mail can't have push mail. Is there a way around this by signing up for Office 365 or any other way?

Thanks

Have you tried using these IMAP settings from here?

Is there any way to get push mail for the Mac Client. If I were to sign up for Office 365 would that work? It's all a bit confusing with whether the Mac client supports Exchange, if so how do I sign up for exchange using my outlook.com mail address.

So many questions :(

If you use the IMAP settings it should push.

I don't believe push works on the Mac client. I think you need to have an account which has exchange support.

Is there someone who can explain what 'exchange' is and how I can use it alongside my outlook.com address with the Mac mail client.

I have no idea why it's so difficult to get this to work. I don't paying if that's what it takes.

A good description of Exchange can be found with a web search and you probably won't see the word "push" mentioned very prominently. Push is an option on Exchange servers. It is "ON" in every case I've encountered.

I don't use my Outlook.com for mail on my Mac so I don't know how it behaves set up as IMAP. On the iPhone it syncs/pushes using a different method, I believe.

Although the Mac supports Exchange syncing with Mail, Calendars, Contacts, Reminders and Notes, I don't get my Office 365 emails "pushed" to my Mavericks Mac no matter what settings I put in there.

The best alternative is to check for mail every minute.

What would be the best way to set up my outlook.com mail with exchange, as it seems this would be a lot more reliable than using IMAP?

I don't believe this works. I think you need to pay for exchange to gain access. At the moment I have my email set-up using IMAP, but it's so unreliable. Emails take a while to send, and I alway get error messages, so I have to take the account offline, and then take be back online to temporary fix it. I can't believe it's so difficult to have reliable email.

For exchange account - you should be able to open a new "exchange account" in Mail < preferences and selecting the + sign to add a new account and then selecting the exchange option

It may or may not work - there has been issues with exchange server communicating with Mail on el capitan - good chance it will since it is outlook.com

Another alternative is outlook 2011 or outlook 2016 which have exchange account settings.

There is no option to use Exchange with outlook.com on the Mac. You will need to get the Exchange online option that is $4/month.

Outlook.com now supports exchange for all users, including free accounts. You have to 1) delete your account on Mac or iOS, re-add using Exchange option. Syncing doesn't work too well but exchange is now supported.

Exchange support for existing users is rolling out (my account doesn't have it, yet). If, when you sign into Outlook.com webmail, you see "Outlook Mail (Preview)" then you have been added to the Exchange rollout. I created a new account and my experience is reported in this thread.

Yep I got that preview on the webmail. So it's setup as exchange on my Apple devices. I have confirmed it by looking at the mail settings. But still mail does not sync for any message operations in other devices or webmail. My guess is the new outlook.com email does not support EAS.
