I hope this is the right place to ask this question.

I have synced the contacts from my iPhone with my Mac. If I send an email to multiple receivers, they can all see how I name them in my own adressbook. For example: last week I sent an email to two colleagues and my neigbour, who is called something similar to ‘Betty the best’ in my own private adressbook on my iPhone/Mac. My colleagues asked me who Betty the best was and I never thought they would see this info too. We laughed about it but it also pissed me off a bit, because WHY are they able to see what I call someone in my contacts?

I obviously don’t want this to happen, especially for my clients to see this kind of info. Is there a way to change the displayed name, apart from changing my neighbours name in my contacts?

In Mail preferences under Composing, you could uncheck "When sending to a group, show all member addresses."

Thanks WildSky, I’ve tried this but it doesn’t change the fact that my recepients can see the names that I gave them in my contacts.

Wow, is this really the way it works? I've always wondered! I had tentatively concluded it worked the other way -- that the names recipients saw in an email were taken from their own Contact book.

Now wondering if I have any odd names in Contact entries...

Good point, never thought about it. Using the address book name is a way to simplify sending emails. You don't have to remember their entire address, just the contact name and mail looks up the correct address. Makes sense.

I guess you have no choice then but to rename those contacts.

Certainly sounds like it. Any alternative would likely be less convenient.
