Mac Mail showing that it is saving drafts

So I am perplexed - I have no drafts residing in either Gmail or locally - why am I seeing that Mail is saving 1 of 42 drafts?

I'm getting the same problem. It's either blocked on "saving X of XX drafts" (although I have only 2 drafts over my 6 mailboxes), or it's "moving XX of XXX messages"
It does this for hours on end and since today it won't open my mails in the right-hand window.

I can see everything on my phone and on my iPad - the mac is supposed to be bigger and cleverer isn't it? I'm at the point of wanting to throw the flipping mac out the window!

I noticed that there are lots of similar questions about drafts taking up lots of disk space too but no replies to any of them :-(
