Up until the beggining of last week Mac Mail was working fine then on Wednesday it all came to a halt with an error triangle icon. I had had this before but in the past it had fixed itself, this time it didn't so at the weekend I started investigating and found that I could get incoming mail using Thunderbord but no outgoingwas working, main error being. . . Unable to verify account name or password.

I have tried Thunderbird and Postbox with the same result, I contacted my Mail supplier who said firstly make sure that you use the latest version of Mac OS that you can, same problem in Catalina. I can connect to Webmail, then my provider tells me that Cpanel upgraded there software last week to make it more secure, more secure indeed, I for one cannot get a connection, seems from what I found out they are not shaking hands therefore no connection.

Mac Mail nothing works, Thunderbird incoming mail only, Postbox nothing works.

To get help here you probably need to reveal the email provider. Perhaps someone has a similar setup.
I can but it is a small UK provider and I doubt very very much if anybody here will have them as their provider.

What OS are you on?

I had a similar problem a few years ago when my domain host upgraded its TLS implementation. My older OS at the time, with its older version of Mail wouldn't "shake hands".

I'd guess you have a similar problem.

This from my hosting company, 2019:

we changed the mailserver setting to SSL3.

It is also important that you upgrade your email client since tlsv1 is no longer supported and has major security holes.

thanks
Sam
