mac/me email not working

My .mac email is not working. Says I have the wrong password but I know I have the right one, and that same password logs in to my icloud account. I can see my contacts and my calendar but no email. I even tried resetting my password.

I tried resetting my password... my old pass word was 7 characters/numbers with only capital letters in it... now they require 8 charachters and they require BOTH upper case and lower case... that did not work either

I need my email back...

I didn't realise that I had a problem until sending myself an email, and got a 'recipient didn't receive your email' message, so I popped over here to see if the icloud cleansing had affected the the .mac / .me variations of emails.

Edit;

although I now realise that the the icloud server sees @me.com and @mac.com as the same place and is refusing to send an email to itself.
