I have a Mini that I use as an HTPC, I haven't used it in about a year but it was stored in a climate controlled environment.

What has been happening is when I try to wake it up from mouse or keyboard input it doesn't do anything. In fact, I don't even have it set to sleep in the system preferences, so it should be on all the time, but it is set to turn off the screen after 3 hours. I was able to use 'Screen Sharing" to access it, so I went to the system preferences to change the resolution, thinking that that would force it to refresh the screen. Unfortunately all that did was lock the system up. I can move the mouse around, but can't click on anything.

Any ideas as to why this happens (this isn't an isolated event) or what I can do to fix it?

sorry i know this wont help, but just saying its always been the same for me.

i had an old G4 mirror doors, with an apple display, and the display would wake. when i bought a cheap replacement monitor, connected through VGA cable, it wouldnt wake up, and weirdly this also stopped teamviewer from being able to wake up the computer. (why would teamviewer wake up a sleeping computer connected to an apple screen, but not a 3rd party one?)

having replaced my old G4 3 years ago with a mini, but kept the same cheap monitor with unmemorable brand, it works perfectly but the minute it goes to proper sleep, it wont wake up from any keyboard or mouse or network prodding. i have to press the button at the back of my mini to wake it up. when the screen goes to sleep at first, it will wake, but once the computer is sleeping its past waking up. and i can only get teamviewer to work (to connect from my work computer) if i turn off sleep and leave the computer on. if the mini is asleep, teamviewer connects fine, i can use the transfer files to access the hard drive, but the screen comes up as black.

I had an HDMI to DVI cable that was to blame for a monitor that wouldn't work recently. I swapped it out while trying to isolate my problem and it was the cable who done it.

I had this problem too. I tried to setup VNC and operate the Mini with an MBA, but there were 3 problems : Black Screen, Sleeping and absence of WOL. So I gave up on it rather than leave it on awake 24/7 connected to a monitor etc and used something else.

If you can solve these let us all know.
