Here i am with a 2010 mini and a freshly today in 64GB SDXC card.

The card works effortly in my MBA2012 and according to that it's Mac OSX Journalized formatted. Now i read on the internet that the Mini would be capable of using these cards.

The thing is, he sees the card but it's marked as read-only on the mini, but if i pop it in the MBA it just works

Anyone got any clues?

SD Card Sharing & Permissions

When the Icon for the Card appears on your Desktop
Right Click it and choose "Get Info", what does it say
at the bottom under "Sharing & Permissions"?

When your formatted the Card you may not have
given another user Permission to Interact with the
card.

There it says directly under Sharing and Permissions: READ ONLY

A few users have rights to R/W (me and one more) I use the same account on my MBA so that couldnt be the culprit

On the everyone permissions it's read only but i can't change that as goes for the others also no on trying to change permissions

Info Window

Ok, with the Info Window visible
scroll all the way down to the bottom
and in the Sharing & Permissions box
in the Right Side Column
click on each of the three
Privilages up or down arrows
and choose what level of
Permission you would like to
give to your SD card.

I would choose "Read & Write"
Privilages to all three that are
named. For example (me), Staff,
and Everyone.

That should work. When the
SD card was originally formatted
these Permissions were probably
not given.

Trust me i tried that, but i can't change permissions on either of the users there. Not even when i unlock the lock and login with my root account.

It's like the entire card is read-only (like you put the lock slider down) and no that isn't the problem.

Also it's formatted on a ML MBA and the mini is also running ML, and reformatting or partitioning the card won't work either on the mini, but then again on the MBA it formats without a hitch

Windows Reformat SD Card

OK, I had that happen to me once. If you have
access to a Windows Machine or a Digital Camera
re-format the SD card using either of those.
Then re-attach the SD card to your Mac, shouldn't
matter which and re-format using Disc Utility then
double check Permissions giving them to "everyone".
That should work.

I do have a windows machine i will try that today, will let you know

Allrighty, i have formatted it on a Win7 machine as exfat, but still the mini won't say it's writeable it stays read only. On my Air it works perfect.

Any other idea, except for buying a new mini :p Planning on doing that anyways when the new model comes but still i want this to work now.

Another update, i reformatted it on my MBA again to FAT32 (since i'm not putting 4gb+ files on it) and it stays exactly the same so not able to write or reformat it on the mine :(

Anyone has an idea?

Try to slide the copy protection slider on the card in the middle position. I had these Read Only SD errors on several macs with several SD/HC Cards. It is annoying to say the least.

Tried that just now and no luck. I'm seriously thinking that the 2010 mini while he has a SDXC slot won't be able to write to cards larger than 32GB

Can you get write access to ANY card? Do you have a small SD card you can try writing to. It could be a bad card reader socket in the Mini.

I tried my photo frame SDcard just now which is 1GB and that works flawlessly.

Also tried my 8GB card from my asus laptop which is configged for ready boost also no problem

I like BeamWalker's hint: How about a mechanical problem? The mechanical write protection recognition in the mini may have a problem in properly detecting the slider position. This could be a card reader problem as well as a problem of the SD card not exactly keeping the specified dimensions of card thickness and slider position..

In this thread there are some additional suggestions (like e.g. taping the slider area) and some helpful pictures (entry by ynneb 04-22-2008 at 04:07:00 AM).

Seems that some people fixed their problem by simply deactivating the write protection completely by using a soldering iron, though you may want to try the taping trick first :)

Yeh BUT, i've tried different cards which all work like a charm and some extra i've picked up another 64GB SDXC one and that also does not work like the other.....

So i'm not thinking of a defective card reader more like a SDXC spec used on the cardreader which does not allow cards higher than 32GB to be used

Based on everything you have tried, my guess is that the SD card reader hardware in your Mac mini 2010 is damaged. I suggest you get your Mac serviced.

I can't tell if you used a passive SD card reader USB dongle on the Mac mini (and MacBook Air). If that works, then clearly your Mac is damaged.

Good luck.

If any, you should've picked a 32GB SDXC card to verify if it's indeed a size problem (SDXC is said to be limited backwards compatible to SDHC, though i don't know exactly what those limits are).

I just want to let everyone know and thanks for the help.

I picked up a 2011 mini and the card functions flawlessly in that. So apparently the 'SDXC' in the older mini's have restrictions :)
