Mac Mini 2010 Jumbo Frames for NAS directly attached

Hi everyone.

Im planning on buying a NAS, the DS1511+, but, for now, I will be using it directly connected to the Mac Mini through gigabit ethernet, until I can install the gigabit network in my house sometime next year.

Both devices have jumbo frames and gigabit ethernet, but I dont know if its possible to enable them and take advantage of them if the connection between the NAS and the Mac Mini is directly, without intervention of a router or switch.

In theory it should be ok, right? If the connection is done with gigabit ethernet and both devices have support for jumbo frames, then it should be ok, but Im not entirely sure.

Does someone know the answer?

I don't know the answer as I don't have the hardware you mention. In the windows world I do know that there is a lot of detailed discussion around optimising NIC performance for Jumbo frames and apparently it isn't always best to have jf enabled. Since most of those config options aren't available to us in the mac world it'll at least be simpler. If it were me I'd try it both ways with some large file transfers and see which one performs better. I'm assuming here that you've found an option to turn on/off jumbo frame support on your mini?

In my own opinion jumbo frames is not any faster than the standard frame setup. I've tried seting things to Jumbo and transfering 38 gigs over the network and changing the settings back with not much difference in the overall average transfer. MY network takes around 6 minutes to transfer that.
