Mac Mini 2014 (SATA HDD model) accept third party SATA SSDs?

Hi all

I've found a Mac Mini 2014 at a bargain price and am going to upgrade from my Hack as I haven't got time to tinker with things and pray things like sleep don't break with an update.

I have a Samsung 850 EVO, and the Mac Mini 2014 that I'm getting is the normal 2.6 model with the spinning HDD (non fusion model).

Can I pop the 850 Evo in and run Internet recovery to install Sierra?

With Hackintoshes, TRIM isn't supported, is this the case with the Mac Mini 2014 with third party ssd too?

I think Internet Recovery should work to reinstall Sierra on the SSD. Or get the mini setup on the HDD, download CarbonCopyCloner (free for 30 day trial), connect the SSD with USB3 and clone the HDD to it, then swap the SSD into the mini.

For TRIM open terminal and run:
sudo trimforce enable

Yup, it works. but the pcie ssd is faster on the 2014

Yes, but I'd like to offer an alternative:
Just leave the existing HDD "in place" and connect the SSD via USB3 and an external enclosure.

Speed will be where you want it, and you don't have to fool around with the inside of the Mini.

Actually, it's easier to add the PCI-e SSD (Apple's own design) to the Mini than it is to add a SATA drive, because you don't have to pull the motherboard out.
