I have the mac mini 2014 with macOS Sierra 10.12.5.

For the past months, I have noticed that when I have a CPU-intensive task, after around 30 minutes, the mac mini overheats and the display turns off. I then have to press the power button to turn the mac off. If i start the mac on again, the display does not turn on, unless I wait for the mac to cool down first.

Any reason and solution for this?

That doesn't sound like normal behaviour. It should throttle the CPU back when the heat builds up rather than giving out.

Maybe try seeing what the CPU temps are (using iStat or something) to confirm this is what's happening.

I installed Fanny (http://fannywidget.com/) and found that the fan speed remains constant to 1800 RPM as the CPU temperature rises although the maximum fan speed is 4200 RPM. I then installed Macs Fan Control (https://www.crystalidea.com/macs-fan-control) which adjusts the speed according to the CPU temperature sensor. This fixes the problem. The same problem occurs on Windows on bootcamp and the same solution works.
