Mac Mini 2018 external monitor lag through HDMI

About a week ago, I purchased the Mac Mini (i5, 8 GB RAM) and connected it to my external 4K monitor with an HDMI to HDMI cable. The input was very laggy. Then I tried connecting it to another monitor (a 2K monitor) with the same cable and it worked well. Do you know where the problem could be? Is 4K too compute intensive for the Mini? BTW: Also tried using a HDMI to DisplayPort cable with the original 4K monitor and the picture was completely black.
