Hello All,

I figured this would be a good place to inquire about a project that needs to be done at my work. I would say I have novice to intermediate experience with iPads (I have more experience using Macbook Pro + Adobe Suite). I confess that I don't have much experience with iBooks Author yet.

Problem:
Training modules are constantly being updated and multiple 600+ page manuals are being printed.

Solution:
Use iPads to store/update training modules electronically. Use a primary Mac system to update this when needed, and sync all iPads with new modules as needed.

Idea Proposal:
The idea is to develop a training software (using iBooks) on a Mac Mini. Then, we want to have that software (whatever training manual we develop using iBooks) to be accessed by multiple iPads for the entire staff. Also, if there are updates to the modules, we want to be able to update it on the primary system (Mac Mini) and have it automatically update all the iPads simultaneously (instead of having to manually update each one). We must be able to do this without using the company's wireless network (so we don't bog down the network).

Conceptually, this is what we would like but we need to know if it is even possible/feasible. In summary,

1) After developing training module .pdf files (using iBooks), is it possible to transfer these files to all 50 iPads (without using the App Store)?

2) If a change occurs in the training module, is it possible to make the change on the primary system (Mac Mini) and prompt all corresponding iPads to update to the newest version (or automatically)?

3) Can all of this be done without going through the primary network (using local wireless only - by setting up an internal router, etc)?

Constraints:
-Cannot use primary wireless network
-Cannot use App Store (confidential training modules)

I am grateful for any advice or help from you experts out there. Also, I would love to consider any options that may be easier or more efficient to solve our problem. Thanks for reading and I apologize for the long winded thread.

I have three iOS devices that update locally via my iTunes running on my Mac mini, instead of always drawing new apps over the Internet. They do it over wifi. This is the 'old' way it used to be done.

If you make the changes and the new PDFs are in your iTunes app on the Mac mini and your iOS devices are linked to that iTunes app on that particular mini, the iOS devices should draw through the new updated file when you sync.

You can set the devices in iTunes to sync over wifi.

You can then either sync them from iTunes, or sync from the iOS devices by going to settings>general>iTunes wifi sync.

I am not sure if you can automate it though.

Also I am not sure if that works specifically with iBooks as I use pdf expert app on iOS. This can do what you want but through a Dropbox link and you update the file in Dropbox. You just click sync on PDF expert and it draws the new PDF through and replaces the old.

I believe if you set the iPads to WiFi sync, they will try and sync when they're plugged in to charge.

I would just stagger plugging them in.
