Is it true that the mini and the iMac (intels) use the same ram type?

If so, I've already upgraded my iMac myself-- can you upgrade the mini yourself or must a technician do it?

Yes they use the same memory. The slots are much more difficult to get at on the mini. The iMac is very simple with the access door.

However, the Mac mini Intel does not, it uses laptop memory.

It can certainly be done by yourself, but it involves a putty knife (to open the case) and some really fiddly work.

All intel macs (macbook pro, intel mac mini, and intel imac) use the same ram: PC2-5300 DDR2-667 SODIMM

- PowerMac G4 "Mirror Drive Door" models

DDR 333 MHz PC2700 200 pin SODIMM "laptop RAM"
- iMac G4 flat panel 1 GHz and above - user accessible socket only
- All Powerbook Aluminum models and all iBook G4's *

DDR 400 MHz PC3200 184 pin DIMMs
- PowerMac G5 prior to Oct 19 2005 Single and Dual Processor
- iMac G5 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 "Rev A and B"

DDR2-533 MHz 240 pin DIMMs (PC2-4200)
- PowerMac G5 Dualcore and Quad
- iMac G5 "iSight" 1.9 and 2.1 GHz

DDR2-667 MHz 200 pin SODIMMs (PC2-5300) "laptop memory"
- Mac Mini intel Core Duo and Core Solo
- MacBook Pro
- iMac intel Core Duo


* there are some models listed under PC2700 which are actually specced for PC2100 -- however any reputable Mac RAM seller will provide compatible PC2700 memory for these.

I gotta say, I hate NewEgg, their policies* and their advertising. Therefore I am compelled to post that Data Memory Systems at $113 for guaranteed Mac-compatible RAM is IMO a better option for US customers. DMS are honest, Mac people.

(* Reason #7: NewEgg's 15% restocking fee policy if you order a module that doesn't work and want a refund...)

Yeah, DMS is great. They got me my 1GB RAM stick really fast when the Intel Macs first came out. Good people, good prices. Of course, I love newegg too, but mainly for my PC needs... You can probably get Mac RAM there, just check the buyer reviews.

I really wish Apple's site would clarify the use of SO-DIMMS. I told a friend (and customer) the other day that they used DIMMs, since that's what the Apple site said...he'll likely order the incorrect ram now. Dangit.

This is why its good to buy RAM from a company like Crucial where they allow you to specify your computer and then tell you what RAM you need for it.\

EDIT: BTW - on the Apple store site it does state thet iMacs etc come with SO-DIMMS, not DIMMs. Where is the conflicting information?
