Mac Mini and monitor capabilities

Hey guys.

I was thinking, the new Mini has two graphics outputs, one Mini DisplayPort and one Mini-DVI. Doesn't this theoretically mean that with the use of a Matrox unit That one can use three, or maybe even four monitors?

Why? The Mini DisplayPort is, according to apple, so powerful that it's the equivalent of Dual-Link DVI (hence the adapter they're selling for the new Macs). If one can put a DualHead2Go through the DisplayPort, and another third monitor in the Mini-DVI, one would have three screens.

Doesn anyone know anything more about this? I'm curious and want to try it out.

Theoretically, yes it is possible. 9400M can be a bottleneck thought, it may not be powerful enough to run 3 or 4 monitors.

And I don't know about the 9400M. I was thinking about 3x22" Monitors with 1680x1050 resolution. It might get slow, but keep in mind that the only graphics work I'll be doing is the occational drawing of web graphics in Photoshop.

I think it can handle those displays well because it can handle 30" and 24" without problems.

Hellhammer is a God of drumming. Dimmu Borgir sucks and he don't play with 'em anymore but Arcturus and Mayhem, ahh, they are one of the best bands ever. Also the mighty boys from Norway's forests, Immortal is definitely one of the best bands (just saw them at Tuska couple of weeks ago)

Try it out and tell us - I think some of these boxes have built-in graphics chips which should help the computer with the displays.

Depending on how well the driver is written, you may have some compatibility issues...

The Matrox ones do, they promise no degrading of graphics performance, but it's still limited to what the actual Mini DisplayPort has a bandwith of.

Mini DisplayPort is powerful. It'll handle 2 displays well because it can handle 30" 2560x1600 display

In theory, you are certainly correct. But I've come to learn that there can be many roadblocks when testing theory in the real world. Especially with Macs.

That's true. Talk with the salesman and try to get a open-deal (return it if it doesn't work for you). That's what I always do if I'm suspicious.
