Mac Mini as a media Server

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but you folks here seem to be home theater savvy.

I've just added a blu ray player to my system. My old JVC SD player could play multi zone / multi region dvds.The new Blu ray doesn't. So I'm wondering if a mac mini would be able to it. I live in a city that has a amazing rental shop that stocks a huge amount of over seas DVDs I don't want to lose out on that.

Mac Mini doesn't have Blu-Ray (yet) if that was one of your questions.

It also only lets you change the region a number of times (I think it's five), and I'm sure the Intel Macs are no longer hackable once you have changed the region five times.

No, I'm good on the blu-ray side. I'd like to watch SD dvd multi region / zone.

I'd be willing to replace the drive in a mini if that would get the job done.

Appears using VLC Player instead of the default DVD Player will bypass the region - so just set up VLC Player to be the default DVD Playback software in System Preferences under CD/DVD.

I haven't played another region of DVD for a while, so maybe someone else can confirm if VLC still does this..
