Mac Mini as HTPC and "Base Mac"

I'm in the process of upgrading my home theater setup and have a few questions. I haven't really seen any specific info on which components to get next based on what I've already got and want to do. So here goes.

I've got:
2.4/250GB/2G uMB and a 32GB iPod Touch
1TB Time Capsule
40" Samsung 1080p 5 Series
Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HDC Cable box/DVR
Xbox 360
Down the road will be the addition of Blu-Ray probably by PS3. I don't see why I'd get a regular BRD player unless it was built in to a Reciever.

I'm looking next to either Apple TV or a Mini. I use my uMB almost exclusively in my living room.

Should I use the uMB as a HTPC and and get ATV+ NAS or get a Mini and use that as a "base mac" and HTPC. I figure I can control it over wifi with my uMB or iPod for streaming internet content, playing iTunes media, moving files between macs, etc.

What would I be giving up in not getting ATV? I don't have tons of video on itunes or dvd's. I stream netflix through the xbox. I do like the idea of iTunes rentals and purchases. I'm not stuck on having hard copies on dvd's either.


What other advantages does the Mini provide?

Does the ATV do anything the Mini won't?

I'm thinking ATV is not the way to go for what I want to do. Besides iTunes content and stored digital media, I'd like to be able to surf the web on my big screen. So the mini is the answer correct? How could I surf without a keyboard and mouse? Logitech remote?

I have this set up, but I do use a keyboard - the logitech dinovo edge mac edition. It's expensive, but worth every penny. No need for a mouse with the built in trackpad.

You can also do this with an iphone / ipod touch (I have tried air mouse pro and rowmote pro, but hippo remote is my favorite), but I really prefer the dinovo edge.

although i know where you are coming from, id have to say neither. Just use your macbook as the HTPC, get a wireless keyboard and mouse, or use your ipod touch by getting an app like air mouse.. thats all you need... no sense spending the 600+ on the mini, or whatever for the ATV... your not gaining anything over the macbook. use the money for surround sound or savings...
