Mac Mini as TimeMachine

I've run a WHS 2011 as the central server for my home, but its inability to properly handle TimeMachine without unstable hacks has lead me to buy a Mac Mini expressly for that purpose.

However, obviously, the 500gb internal HDD is far from enough. What's the best way to expand the storage options? USB? Firewire? Thunderbolt?

I have a lot of HDDs at home, so I don't need more external drives. Just enclosure will be great.

My setup is like this.

Mac mini wireless joined to home network.
NAS (DS411J , BTB) connected via ethernet to Mac Mini.

Right now the Synology Nas does not allow connection via USB .

So Skip synology.....

Here's what I have set up. It's by no means sophisticated but it works.

I have an old G4 mini with an external 1TB drive. The mini doesn't have wifi but it has a wired connection to the wireless router.

I also have a new MacBook Pro. I connect to the mini's external drive and use that for TimeMachine backups.

Curious as to why you didn't just buy a Time Capsule? Cheaper and easier setup than a mini, no?

Heya

For me people who really care for their data should not buy time capsule.

If time capsule HD crashes, that's it.. you cant recover the data.

With a mulitple HD NAS, one or two disc failure is expected but your data is always retrievable.

Apple should take over QNAP or Synology.
