Mac Mini Base handbrake times?

I have a base 2.3ghz 2011 mini and 8 gb of ram. For a 2 hour mkv I am getting 15-20fps and about 3 hours on the Apple TV 2 setting and about 7fps on high profile. Is this about right?

I am on Windows 8 right now its probably faster on OSX, I will update this later.

That's probably not bad. I'm on a 2.7 GHz i7 Mac mini and it takes about 2+ hours or so to encode a bluray ripped .mkv file in HandBrake to the AppleTV 2 setting.

Hmmmm,

Guys, is there a reason you're converting and not remuxing? AppleTV supports the enclosed files within bluray mkv's. Just needs a simple remux - usually 2 to 10 minutes!

Size would be a good reason. You could maintain very good quality using the High Profile plus Web Optimized to play on the ATV3 1080p and save 75% of the space.

Yeah, there's a great reason. Size. I can take a 30 gig BluRay and still have it be in fantastic quality while only taking up 2-3 gigs.

Ie, right now I have 349 movies consuming 560 gigs. If those were not converted it would take somewhere between 6 to 10 terrabytes just for those movies. For me, converting is a no brainer. I don't care enough about the slightly degraded quality to justify spending the ridiculous amount of money it would take to have redundant storage for 15-20 terrabytes of media.

I have masses of redundant storage, more than enough to store that much data. It's called my Bluray Disks (and the shops).

Only joking, but what is the point of ripping when it presents such storage or encoding challenges and when just playing to disk is so easy?

iPad playback. Also, Apple TV streaming.

So my entire movie collection is available in every room without having to worry about where the disc is

Yup. All my discs are ripped to the Mac. The disc cases are thrown away, and all discs are in a single binder hidden on a shelf far far away. I hate my bluray player, and the dreadful time to turn the crap on, sit throug forced previews, etc. I may toss the damned thing!
