my mum has a mac mini core solo 1.5ghz. those cannot read the dual layer dvd discs so therefore i cannot upgrade the leopard to snow leopard directly. is there any other way i can do it? i checked to see if remote install was on the mac mini but it dosent come with it so anyone have any tips?

I'm pretty sure it can, it has a combo drive so it can read DVDs just not burn them, have you tried it? I'f I'm wrong about that though you should be able to put the disk in another computer and use that computer in target disk mode to install it.

I wonder if the mac air optical drive will work with it. I know it does with the 2010 minis. The apple rep told me I could try it and return it if it didn't work out.
BTW I have snow leopard on my core solo mini and it works great. It is upgraded to 1GB ram though.

3rd party external optical drives are better IMO. 100$ for the Apple version is quite expensive. Besides, 3rd party ones will work with any computer
It won't work, the USB port on the macbook air and mac mini server gives more power than a normal USB port, so they can run it, but most computers or USB hubs can't
Why would it not be able to read a dual layer DVD? If it's a combo drive and can read DVDs, being dual-layer has nothing to do with it. It should just work. All DVD players can read dual layer disks. Not all burners can burn dual layer, however.
