Hi, Am looking for a monitor for my 2011 mac mini
I'm a student with a very tight budget, $150 max!
What display would people recommend? DVI or VGA?

20" screen max (don't have space to go any bigger :( )

Any suggestion are great

Thanks

Any chance you where this can be bought in the uk? I just converted my price above because most people on here are from the us

If you can squeeze to these dimensions: 392.9 x 509.6 x 175 mm

Then there is a nice BenQ that is being heavily discounted on Amazon right now. Down from £131 to £85. It is a 21.5" though.

BenQ's UK website: http://tinyurl.com/7vpuryr

If thats no good.. there are a few others on Amazon. all 20" and all under your budget.

Might be an idea to check out PCworld.. who are having sale.

Looking on the Web

Should the resolution be
1366x768
1280x768

Which is better?

Also HDMI or DVI?

Thanks

1366x768 is very close to an HD resolution (almost 16:9). 1280x768 isn't quite as close.

DVI and HDMI are the same image quality wise. HDMI can carry audio, whereas DVI cannot.

Whats an aspect ratio? (i am very much a noob)

so I'm going to buy a 1366x768 monitor, this seems to be general consensus. Correct?

I've got a set of speakers so sound docent matter.

Thanks

This link shows you some examples of aspect ratio:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspect_ratio_(image)

Basically most monitors you'll find these days are either 16:9 or 16:10. Films are usually in 16:9, so you might want a 16:9 if you plan on watching films on your monitor.

I had until recently a 22" 16:10 monitor (1680x1050 res) and I'v recently got a 24" 16:9 (1920x1080 res). And there isn't really much difference when using them for the usual PC-type stuff.

The main difference is when watching films, on my 16:10 monitor it'd have black borders at the top and bottom of the screen. Theres no black borders on the 16:9.

haha how helpful, that will really help me to choose a good monitor.

Any reasonable views?
You can't really go wrong with Acer. Acer are definitely up there with the best of the technology players. I don't like picking items for people. I feel like I'm spending their money for them and I'm not into doing that.

Get this monitor. And you will be happy. Guaranteed.

I have a 2711x in dual screen mode with my TBD and seriously I don't care what people say, IPS this and higher resolution that. I have a hard time just by looking at the two which one is better.

I had the TBD as my main display and the 2711x off the the right of me slanted. Just for a extra display. Couldn't justify another TBD for just more screen real estate. I now have them side by side. With the TBD at the same resolution as the 2711X which is 1920x1080. The higher resolution I like but the font is just too little and I have to proof read contracts and put together presentations it gets a little tired on the eyes.

The HP display is a glossy with a coating on it to reduce glare and let me tell you it works. Now I do like the TBD better. Just by looking at them straight ahead you would be hard pressed to pick which one looks better. You can't beat a IPS display. But the HP costs one third of the TBD and makes a good impression of duplicating the image quality of the TBD.

But for bang for the buck, the HP displays can't be beat.

Just remember, its the display that you look at all day, so if possible, skimp on something else, not the display or you will regret it later on. ;)

Exactly. That's not something to skimp on. Get something nice.
