I have an early 2009 Mac mini and had it directly attached to my Sony Bravia HDTV via HDMI. The resolution was set to 1080p, and everything worked fine (I use Plex). Recently, I bought an HDMI receiver, and since then, the Mac mini sometimes switches its resolution to 1080i. I have to manually set it to 1080p again, which it then keeps for a while, but eventually will switch to 1080i again.

Is there a possibility to lock it to 1080p?

I'm thinking of buying a new Mac mini, which has a HDMI port, could this problem go away with the current model?

I know this may not help you but I have an Onkyo receiver with HDMI inputs. My 2009 Mac Mini was connected to it using a mini DVI to HDMI adapter and an HDMI cable and I had no problems with it staying at 1080p. My new 2011 Mac Mini is connected directly to it using an HDMI cable and it also has no problem staying at 1080p.
