They WILL probably discontinue the Macmini for the simple reason that it thwarts Apple's plan to make $$$. The mac mini effectively replaces a tower, Apple TV, and a notebook (in some ways) not to mention it's the cheepest full featured computer they sell.

In no way does it replace any of the above, especially not a tower. Or a notebook.

As far as ATV, they would rather sell a Mac Mini than an AppleTV anyway to someone who wants to rent and buy movies.

How about at least updating the wireless to the N standard. There is just no excuse for that.

If the Mac Mini had the newest mobile CPU, decent ATI mobile video card and the ability to fit 4 GB of memory, it would easily replace a tower, iMac and/or AppleTV (especially with a networked HD) for nearly all purposes. I agree it wouldn't do much to replace a notebook.

MacMini like the Energizer Bunny: Keeps Going

Since the Mac Mini shares essentially the same components as the Macbook, I don't see Apple getting rid of a sales channel for components they're already purchasing for the Macbook. If the mini is "retired", I would bet it is replaced by a redesigned mini-esque computer.

Since the Macbooks were recently upgraded, I would expect to see the Mac Mini's receive similiar component/spec upgrades by summer (i.e. Santa Rosa chipset, new GPU).

While Apple doesn't want the Mini to compete with Macbooks or iMacs, it's specifications ensure that it really won't ever. If you want wireless N on your mini, just get a USB-N "card." It really is that simple. Apple keeps the Mini handicapped just enough, that people who need more tech-specs go with an iMac, or better.

Long live the Mini! :D

:apple:

Well at first they were marketing the Mini as an all affordable Mac/Media center PC. iMacs are now pushed as the base level mac (around $600 more then the macmini) and Apple TV is the new media center(about half mac mini price point). Yes it doesnt replace a tower (for a high end user) but for the average user it does. And it doesnt exactly take the place of a notebook but the mini is as portable as one. Of all the Apple hardware available it's probably the most flexable.

You stupid fools! never listen to rumors on this site! they were all wrong!

Mini Tower! HA HA !! :D

The fact that they haven't updated it recently doesn't bode well . . . They wouldn't discontinue a product at MacWorld. If it gets discontinued, it will be silent, well after the new products are shipping.

I'm more than happy to be wrong and the fool in this case!

The Mini is still with us!

Since it follows the MacBooks, it will be probably updated in the fall to the SR chipset...

The $599 Mini is great if you've already invested in a nice monitor, or want a real computer in your home entertainment center...

Looks like if you want to add the external Superdrive, that's $99!
