So, I've ordered a new Retina MacBook Pro and I'm waiting (im)patiently for it to arrive. I was brainstorming what to do with my Mid-2010 MacMini and decided I'd try to use it as a file server for my movie and tv shows (the MBP only has a 512gb SSD).

I've set up AFP file sharing on the Mini, and this works great over my LAN, however I'd like to set up the Mini to share files remotely over the Internet. So, for example, if I'm at someone else's house, I'd like to have my media folders which reside on my Mini mounted on my new MBP and accessible to iTunes to watch as seamlessly as possible. I'd also like th connection to persist from session to session. I'm fairly proficient with computers but I don't have much experience with FTP, etc.

If it matters, my Mini is a mid-2010 SERVER (dual hard drives), however I am running Snow Leopard CLIENT software. I do have the Server install discs if this would help.

Hmm... have a look at 'AirVideo' and/or the server client. Just configure the folder/files you want to access in the AirVideo server and you should be ready to go. A colleague with uses that for his macs, iPad and iPhone (when he works away).... doesn't have any problem with streaming stuff over the web. He actually showed me one day at work... ended up watching 'Good Fellas' whilst trying not to get caught!!!

Thanks! This looks like it might be what I need. Although now I'm considering just selling the Mini and getting a FW HD to bring along with my rMBP and store media.

So the assumption is that you'll have your MBP with you? You could consider installing logmein hamachi, which creates a zero config VPN between the machines.

Thank you. I will look into that as well.
