My Mac Mini starts up fine, wireless mouse works fine, but will not open any applications, browser, menu bars - nothing! It will play DVD's and Front row works fine off the remote, just nothing else!?

Tried to reinstall the OS but the application window opens and freezes and doesnt do anything.

Problem started when I downloaded movie content two days ago - is the Mac doing something in the background thats locking everything else, and how can I see this?

what sort of 'movie content'

Strangely, not the kind you might expect.

The film's not the problem that came down fine, but as a wmv. I then started messing about with file format converters and evrything went very wrong.

Have you tried another mouse? Sounds like it might be a bad mouse. You could also try creating a another user account and see if it is also affected.

exactly the same problem

my mac mini (late 2009 2.53GHz 9400M 4GB with custom 500GB 7200rpm) have the same behavior last week. I think since the last Mac OS 10.6.4 security update.
It froze 3 times but i can move the mouse without being able to click.
And the keyboard doesn't work on the other side.
So weird.
Any idea ?
Thanks in advance
