Hi,

I have the chance to buy a Mac Mini G4 at a really good price (£40) although it doesn't have a hard drive. I can get a hard drive on eBay for £36 so total cost would be £76.

Having never owned a Mac but wanted one is this worth buying?

Any thing i need to consider or need to know?

Thanks in advance.

It depends on what you would want to do with it. They are very slow and won't run the current operating system (Snow Leopard) or most applications. All right to play around with, but it better come with the original install disks.

I still have the mini G4 that I originally gave to my Dad some years ago.
It's noticeably slow, but not that bad, so I'd say:
  • Fine for browsing the web etc
  • Acceptable but Not ideal for Word Processing & Spreadsheets
  • Definitely no good for Photoshop, games, video editing

The mini is a great little machine so for that sort of price, and as a way of experiencing OSX I'd say go for it. You may find after a few months that you love OSX but want more speed & splash out on a more modern Mac.

But as Talmy points out, Snow Leopard (latest OS) won't run on it, so you should make sure you can find a copy of Leopard or Tiger or it will be a pretty paperweight ..
