Mac Mini GMA965 predictions.

Since the Mini has to stay a step below the Macbooks, what is probably going to happen to the Mini during the next update would be a bump to 1.83 C2D chips.

When the Macbooks finally go over to Santa Rosa, then and only then perhaps will we see a bump to C2D 2.0ghz processors.

At this rate when can we even expect to see SR in the Mac Mini?
 
I'd assume definitely C2D. But that doesn't sound like much of an update if they don't also raise the clock speed from 1.63/1.86 Ghz.

On the other hand, if they go to C2D, come with 1GB standard RAM, boost the HD size, and, for the love of god, drop the Combo drive, that's not a bad update.

I agree they need to drop the Combo Drive... I was appalled to see it remain in the £700 MacBook - so I think we can assume it will remain in the Mac mini. :eek:
 
There's really no reason now why the Mac Mini can't stay in sync with the MacBook specs as far as chipset goes. I expect a C2D/memory bump this occasion with SR included ready for the Christmas buying season, roughly at the same time the MacBooks move to it.

Does Intel even MAKE a 1.63 Core2 Duo?

Even at 1.86, a C2D with sufficient memory would probably crunch h.264 for me (using Handbrake) faster than my current 2xG5 2.0 tower, while running more quietly.

Improved specs are not even my top priority for the media room, though. What I want (in order of priority) is:

1. Better support for HDTV screen overscan geometry.
2. A DVD Player that does a better job of de-interlacing.
3. Better support for third-party codecs in QuickTime.
4. More reliability with DTS and other surround-sound formats.

you forget that apple is making the mac mini as a pc?! if you want all this then buy he product that apple makes to do exactly that, :apple: TV! duh, no brainer :( :( :(
 
Does the Mac Mini really have to be far behind the Macbook or is it just cost?
They could give the Mini SR, regardless of the Macbook's situation, as long as it retained the same price but it's just terribly unlikely.
The Mini is an entry-level computer and whether the iMac is a bad purchase if you already have a monitor/keyboard/mouse etc., it's never supposed to fill the "gap" people talk about.
The GMA doesn't matter to most of the people buying it, surely and so Apple will update simply when it suits.

Is Apple going to drop the Mini or is it still selling?
They might even wait until after an iMac refresh.

Wow, the Apple TV has a DVD drive now?
And proper support for Quicktime codecs?

Intel makes the T5500 C2D Merom @1.66GHz, there's at least one OEM version as well.

Intel's line of slow(er) CPUs aren't likely to disappear very soon. The low-clocked Socket M CPUs are great for sub-notebooks or other tiny systems. Just recently Intel introduced new single core Socket M Celeron processors in the 1 to 1.5 GHz range.

Hear hear... glad I'm not the only person who is perennially disappointed by DVD Player's quality of playback. I'm often forced to go to a normal TV if I want to watch a DVD of anything 2-D (Cartoon Network, anime, etc).

Perian + Flip4Mac has played everything I've thrown at it (except a 60fps video, h.264 ironically enough). What codecs are causing problems for you?

What wrong with the guality of playback on the Mini? I wach DVDs on my Mini all the time. And I don't see any problem.

I have the 1.5 Core Solo with SuperDrive.

If they drop the horrible GMA graphics i will buy a mini for sure.

And plz :apple: give us proper 5.1 surround sound for the love of god!

With a lot of the 2-D stuff I watch, whenever there's fast movement (or just movement in general), I can usually see lots of scanlines, or stuff that would appear to be compression artifacts. But on an 480i TV, it's far less noticeable, at least to my eye.

That's strange. I have a 19" Acer LCD and I don't see any compresion, or artifacts on the screen. It just seems to run as if I was watching the DVD on my TV with DVD player. :/
