I have a question about upgrading the mini's hard drive. I currently have a G4 1.42 GHz Mac Mini with 1GB Ram and an 80 GB 4200 rpm hard drive. I have have an external 160 GB 7200 rpm hard drive connected via the firewire 400 connection. I was thinking of upgrading the internal hard drive to 160 GB 5400 rpm. Would that make a difference in performance over the 4200 rpm drive? I could also make the external firewire drive bootable and use that. What do you think would give me the most performance gain, upgrading the internal drive or making the external drive bootable? Thanks.

The 5400 will be faster than the 4200, not by an awful lot though. I may be wrong but I think the firewire is faster than both? I'm not sure.
The external drive is faster than the internal but the FW400 interface slows it down again. It would probably depend on how you were using it to make a call which was faster in RW performance.
Thanks for the replies. I just made my external drive bootable and it seems to be running quicker than the internal drive. I think I will save the money for the larger internal drive and get a larger external drive when I need more space.
