Hi everyone. I have an audio problem with my 2011 Mac Mini Server.

I have a Dell u3011 hooked up with a mini displayport to displayport cable and my Sony 1080p TV with an HDMI cable. When I try to change the audio output to my Sony TV it won't let me, but it will let me select my computer speakers and my u3011. When I disconnect my u3011 I can then select my Sony TV and the audio plays through the TV fine. As soon as I hook up my u3011 the sound reverts back to my computer speakers and I'm unable to select my TV for audio output.

Any ideas?

possibly stupid question: tried changing which one is the main monitor in displays? (couldn't think of anything else)

There's a story up today on cult of mac about this I think and how to fix. about audio via display out port and hdmi converter cable anyway.
you do a pram and smu reset.

I just did and it didn't help.

does it let you select it using the Audio MIDI Setup.app?

No. Just like in the sound preferences it shows that I should be able to select it but when I do it just ignores me and keeps what I had selected, either my computer speakers or my Dell monitor.

Those are both things I tried before posting but I tried them again just now and neither worked.

Thanks for trying everyone!

Audio issue

There is an old issue about the audio output through HDMI and audio resetting when you change display.
Make a search in the forum about the "mac mini audio hdmi issue".

I had to buy and Gefen HDMI Detective Plus to solve the question with my 2010 mini, and was waiting to find if the 2011 MM was with or without the same problem.

The HDMI Detective was like magic for the audio problems. I was so confident that it could solve all my HDMI issue in my installation that I bought two others, but it didn't work for other problems like distance drop of signal, etc.

If you live in Europe, it could be cheaper for you to get one of my "untouched" ones. Let me know to arrange something just in case...
