I'm looking to buy a mac mini sometime in the near future to replace my Macbook Pro/VGA to TV setup to watch my shows and listen to music. I have a collection of music, TV shows, and moves on my MBP in iTunes, sorted in albums/seasons, etc. Here's what I want to do:

1) Have my itunes library on my MBP completely synced to the itunes library on the mini, playcounts, ratings, everything. I don't want to stream though; I want to be able to have my MBP asleep and still get to my content. Then when I wake my MBP up and open itunes (or whatever syncing program I use) the plays and ratings and that would automatically sync between the two.

2) *POSSIBLY* keep all my videos on the mini, in order to free up space on my MBP. However I still want my itunes music to sync, so this might not be possible. If it was, I would be able to just watch my movies/tv shows on the mini, and if I needed to take them with me on my MBP I would just copy them back to the other computer. Right now, my videos are lower-quality (probably 360p) HD videos, and I would like to instead get 720p but don't want to take up that much space on the MBP.

I have an ipod nano and a shuffle and am hopefully getting an iphone 4 soon, so I want to stick with itunes and itunes formats for media so I can sync it to my mobile devices. I'm sure I will get a handful of "Plex FTW" responses, but from what I can tell Plex doesn't allow syncing with itunes (ex. ratings and playcounts).

So basically I need something to sync music from one itunes library to a second library, without streaming. Any ideas? Thanks!

Watching with interest

I've tried demos of a couple of commercial programs - not really impressed - so I wait with interest for the comments you get.

Plex doesn't really have anything to do with syncing iTunes libraries so that shouldn't be a part of your equation. I don't know that what you want to do is possible. It sounds like you want to treat your MBP like an iPod and have it sync as such. I don't think this is possible currently, but you are not alone in requesting the feature. You can partially accomplish what you want with Home Sharing in iTunes, but it does you no good once you leave the Network.
