So I just bought a brand new Mac Mini to use with my Samsung LN-R408D LCD TV. I hooked it up using mini DVI to HDMI for video, which works great. I also hooked up a TOS to Optical cable from the headphone jack in the Mini to the optical out in my TV. My TV does not have an optical in port. I'm getting absolutely no sound through the TV speakers. I also tried hooking up a male to male stereo cable from the headphone jack on the mini to the PC audio in, in my TV with no luck. I've attached a shot of the back of my TV from the instruction booklet.

Does anybody have any suggestions? I'm at my wits end here.

Would that new cable at Monoprice work, the one with the USB and miniDVI to HDMI port work for me? Has anybody had any experience with it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

That TV only supports audio in from the PC VGA input.

SO in order to use it you would need the Displayport to VGA or mini DVI to VGA.

That will not work either

If he is using HDMI than the TV expects a signal over HDMI.

Using the audio inputs from other sources will not work.

The RCA jacks are for component / composite / svideo

I guess it really depends on the TV

But mine only accepts optical from HDMI over HDMI.

My set does not have the stereo input for VGA. It uses RCA for
the RCA inputs on my set are for component input and vga. I think Samsungs are different though.

I guess it is best to try it out.

Optical will not work since that is an output.

Whats the point of providing specific audio inputs for the HDMI/DVI jack as outlined in section 10 of the attachment then?

I'm a little confused. Would a stereo to RCA cable work?
Yes.
It seems to me that people hook the Minis up via HDMI (for video) and optical inputs (for audio) on their TVs a lot, so the comment about the TV expecting a signal wouldn't be correct would it? I don't know, I'm not a pro, just asking.
Most people hook up to an AVR which can receive and decode an optical signal. Most TVs cannot accept optical inputs.

Thanks! I'll run out and get one now. Hope it works. Thanks again!

Well, I got the cable and plugged it in and it worked! What a trip that was. Thanks again.
