Mac mini i7 late 2012 RAM and SSD brand recommendations.

Title pretty much say it :eek:
After getting tired of waiting I decide to get Mac mini i7 late 2012 and immediately upgrade it to 16GB of memory and 256GB SSD
I was reading somewhere that not all of memory brands works well with mac even if it meets Apple specs.
I wanted to get this memory because they available locally where I live http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233265
and I was thinking of Samsung 840 pro (because I have one in my gaming rig and its doing well) but I don't know how its going to work with Mac mini :confused:

Any advices please.
 
If you hurry this is a great buy. I got one these for mine. Works great but the disk is for windows only.

I can't give any real advice but can say that my Mac Mini i7 2.6 has 16 gigs of RAM, internal Samsung 840Pro 512 drive and runs well enough. In general there have been no real issues related to either the increased RAM or the SSD. This combo works well for me doing typical stuff and some graphics oriented work (along with virtual Win 7 for the 3 apps I need on that side of the fence).

Your RAM choice is what I have and it works fine. I hadn't looked recently, but prices have really skyrocketed. Mine was $89.99 on Amazon. Glad I got it when I did.
 
RAM is RAM. Buy a decent brand and you'll be fine.

The same goes for the SSD really, the difference from one to another (unless you're going for a really high end drive) is negligible for your typical user. Samung and Intel tend to the be the two most recommended brands.
 
Crucial and DIY Fusion

I also bought the 16GB Crucial kit and set up a Fusion drive with a 120GB Kingston SSD from my old Mini. Runs great.
 
I just installed 16 GB of Kingston 2 X 8GB Module - DDR3L 1600MHz Part Number: KVR16LS11/8

Everything went in and configured without a glitch. I had cloned the original drive using Super Duper and a external dock. The hardware install took about 30 minutes. I went for consumer grade, lower price items, we will see how they last.

Tel me please did you have to move the logic board with the Logic Board Removal Tool ? or it is possible to side the SSD without moving the logic board? and if it is not possible to do it without the tool is there's anything around can replace this removing tool (bended wire for example) :rolleyes:?

If you elect to only swap out the drive, you don't need to totally take apart the Mini. There are 3 primary items to remove, slide out the original drive, replace, put back together. There are several how to vids on this. If you plan to use the original drive plus the SSD, then you need to disassemble the entire Mini plus will need an additional mSATA cable etc.

Just be careful when disconnecting cables and make sure to seat the SSD properly (there are screws that are on the drive that are used to help position the drive). It is not really complicated but for some the steps themselves require patience and a watchful eye.
 
2012 2.3 i7 purchased from B&H with 16GB of Crucial RAM, a Crucial M500 960GB SSD and an OWC Data Doubler to move the OEM HDD to the upper bay.

The setup works really nice. It's lightning fast compared to the 2009 2.66 C2D mini with 8GB RAM and a 72k HDD that it replaced.

Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz 16GB RAM. I run it in a 2011 mini Server 2.0GHz quad and 2012 mini 2.6GHz quad. Exceptional stuff. Not cheap though.
 
Loving my Mac Mini

I have a Late 2012 i7 2.3 that I purchased Dec 2013 with the stock 4gb ram and installed the OWC doubler kit with a Samsung 840 pro 256gb as a boot drive and the stock 1TB HDD for media/data storage. I just ordered the Crucial 16gb DDR3 1600mhz from B&Hphoto.com. drives next Tuesday, but i've used Crucial ram in my MBP with not problems. Should be fine. I'm looking forward to seeing how FCPX responds to vlogging edits.

For my 2010 install, I did have to shift the mobo. I didn't have the mobo removal tool, so I used two drivers, inserted into the holes. Advantages of the special tool include easier leverage, ease of holding, and less risk of damage of something underneath the hole. But the special tool is optional.
